It's sort of sad what happened to Owen Nolan. The trade to Toronto seems to effectively been the end of his career. He wasn't the same player after the trade even before he got hurt. Now unless a miracle happens and he's healthy enough to play again (which would most likely not be at the level we would want to see from Owen Nolan) his career is over. And the Leafs gave up Alyn McCauley who turned into a really solid player for the Sharks this past year to get him. Now thanks to poor decisions in the past, McCauley's name can be added to the list of former Leafs who blossomed after being traded. Even players who didn't transform into spectacular guys were given up on too soon and they became decent NHL role players (I.E. Kevyn Adams, Adam Mair, Frederik Modin etc)

Nolan is not only done with Toronto, he's probably done with Hockey. His knee is badly messed up.

As for the whole Nolan/Leafs fiasco, here's a quick breakdown:

Nolan's contract says he has lockout protection which means that the Leafs are on the hook for his pay last year as he was injured.

Nolan's contract also states that he has a player option on an additional year which he is invoking.

The Leafs are saying that the lockout protection doesn't count because he was injured (not from Hockey) before the lockout season would have begun. That means that the lockout protection doesn't count and 2004-2005 would have been Nolan's option year. He received a lockout salary (only a few hundred thousand dollars) but claims that the Leafs owe him his full pay for that period due to his lockout clause.

The Leafs believe that he's a UFA right now and that they don't need to buy him out.

The bottom line: Nolan will either become a UFA or get bought out by Toronto. He may or may not receive the difference between his actual contracted salary and his lockout salary for 2004-05. Regardless of how much money Nolan gets, he will not play this year in Toronto and will not count against Toronto's cap.

Corson abandonned the Toronto Maple Leafs during a playoff run. He decided that he was unable to contribute and walked off the team.

I don't believe the team medical staff checked him out.

Ya, the didn't need to give Aki Berg a qualifying offer when he was a RFA earlier this year but they did.

Now he's under contract and they can't just simply release him.

Same story for Wade Belak and Nathan Perrott, those guys I'd like to see gone from Toronto.

The leafs fans have to accept the sad truth: the team gotta stop signing has beens to survive 1 or two years and start drafting correctly and developp players. You wont develop a good team for the long term by signing thomas, damphousse or anybody similar to them...

As for Redden, I tought this guy was labeled «untouchable» but everybody will have to sacrifice some players in the new context! Man if I was a GM I 'd love to trade for this guy!!

And I find funny when people say things like «T.O. needs a physical D» hey! Every team wants a physical D (maybe except Philly) And everyu team would like to get rid of a Aki Berg-like player to get a good stay at home physical D. As a guy from the Q , I know the habs would like a physical D also and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind getting rid of a guy like Rivet(overpaid) for a good cheaper stay-at-home physical D....and its the same scenario in every nhl town except philly!!!
