Well, whether or not Roy is included in the deal is ok. Roy will be moved even if the price is just picks to be included in another deal. The pick could going to Colorado could be the #12, but when Weber is included for an under-performing and high paid center it seems kind of high. The Sabres need to send a significant salary to Colorado in order for the deal to work, unless they already unload it in a separate deal.

problem is if Colorado is shopping Stastny because they don't want to pay 3 centermen to big money then why are they taking Roy? Also consider he only has one year left until UFA and that might be a scare factor and consider that Roy is going to be paid $5.5M cash for a $4M cap hit, Colorado is more of a floor team and that contract is bad for them.

I just cannot see it happening especially when the other pieces you get are Weber and the 21st overall pick.

Since wing is not a position of need on the Sabres, it's far more likely they try to land one of the centers rumored to be on the market: Staal, Stastny, or someone else. I'd consider who the teams are that have a center being used improperly, the way Hodgson was in Vancouver. The Sabres need a center that they could use either as a true #1 or a solid #3. Roy is neither.

The Sabres have assets to make a move: 4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds, an extra NHL defenseman on the roster, and Derek Roy (should anyone want him). They also have a glut of talented young defensemen even after moving Gragnani in the Kassian/Hodgson deal. I expect them to do something, but who can say what?

Staal will simply cost more than they should pay in a trade, and Carolina seems willing to overpay to get him. Nash is the same way, plus he's a winger which they don't really need. I like the idea of bringing in Stastny, he's not the leader in Colorado anymore, it's no longer his team and they can't pay a default 3rd line center $6.75 million. Plus they need to pay Duchene and O'Reilly, so he's getting moved. In Buffalo he could be the #1 center for Vanek and Pominville, allowing Hodgson to play with Leino's line and help kick start him. There's no way they mess with the chemistry of Foligno-Ennis-Stafford right now either. What would it cost? Potentially Roy, a roster defenseman, and 1 of the #1 picks. While I might say Roy, Leopold, and the #21 pick, that asks the Aves to take on more money than Stastny costs, so Weber makes more sense money wise for the Aves.
