I like what you're saying Nords, and ya I think Bernier could be a great fit, tons of upside. I also am with you 100% on bringing more grit on board although I'm not as high on Gaustad as I used to be.

I was listening to AM 550, Buffalo sports radio, and they were talking about Gaustad going UFA, and all the Sabre fans calling in said they didn't want him back, wanted nothing to do with him, and many callers seemed to fault Gaustad for not fighting Lucic, even though he was on the ice at the time of the Miller hit. This is a sore spot still for Sabres fans, many of whom believe that incident defined their season, and the lack of heart and grit displayed defined their team. Everyone in Buffalo is calling for the same thing as us, more toughness, big power forwards and gritty role players.

Huh. Seems like Burke decided to get rid of him then. Probably planned to rework the roster into a puck carrying blueline and a gritty offensive core. Just the way Carlyle likes it.

I really think Jonathan Bernier is the answer in goal for the Leafs, not Luongo.

I think he fits perfectly into the style and kinds of moves Brian Burke tends to make as Leafs GM.

He wants those young guys, under 25, who need a change. Kessel, JVR, Dion, Franson, MacArthur are some of his success stories. Others have failed, like Versteeg, but you get the idea, he likes these guys to give them a new lease on life, while they're still relatively young.

Bernier is perfect. 24 years old, he's ready to legitimately challenge for a no. 1 job.

Seeing how Lindback cost the Bolts 2 2nds, It will take at least that + to get Bernier. At the end of the day, I think it would be greatly worth the trouble for the Leafs.

Scrivens is a possible candidate to go the other way. and/or one of their D, maybe Blacker, with a high pick. or possibly a forward. I would guess one of Kadri or Colborne could interest the Kings.

That would be a good deal to flip former first rounders. Its like the Ashton for Aulie, youngster for youngster trade, or like the recent JVR for Schenn deal.

I think something like that, Kadri or Colborne for Bernier is something that could work. They could too expand the deal and try and pry Kyle Clifford as well from LA.

Depth in goal is great. And I think a duo of Reimer and Bernier could really be much stronger than Reimer/Gustavsson. I think there is a greater ceiling for Bernier to succeed, and I think he could do it here.

Couple this, with acquisitions up front of the grit, toughness variety and maybe, just maybe this team could compete.

Still high on Ott, maybe Clutterbuck if that's possible. I like Clifford from LA, Gaustad is also possible. I don't believe they need a fighter. Team toughness is the sell here for me. Orr too can handle it for a year.
