Is it wrong for me to say I wish it was the "Toronto Sharks"?

Man that franchise has a ridiculous future ahead of them not to mention how good they are now.

  2. nordiques100 says:

Thankfully this will put to rest some of the ridiculous trade rumours from two particular Eastern Canadian cities. hmmm let me trade just a few pieces (definitely not all because that would be far too much to give up) of our third rate talents for a top line centre just entering his prime.

  3. Jeff198 says:

Well I guess thus means he isn't coming to Montreal or being traded. Unless it's a sign a trade package but i wouldn't beleive so.

RDS.CA is reporting its a 4.5 million dollar deal.

WOW thats a pretty good price for the all-time point leader in San Jose at only 27 years old. If Thorton stays he'll pass him in a couple years.

  4. leafy says:

In my article last week, I said this would happen.  Ho hum, just a little ahead of the times as usual.

  5. modk09 says:

$4.5 is a steal. are you sure that wasnt them saying what he made this year? I’m not questioning you specifically bt it wouldnt be the first time it happened on here

  6. Wings19 says:

Actually its 6.3 million for the next two years and 4.5 in the last year.
    Confirmed on

  7. simplyhabby says:

I second that,  How long was Eklund playing those rumors?

  8. habsoverserver says:

good work by wilson. they need to keep their team intact since they have a legit shot at a finals appearance over the next three years.

  9. rtpuckhog says:

Actually, TSN is reporting 12.6 Million over 2 years, 6.3M per year. RDS must think its 6.3M Canadian to get 4.5M, otherwise I'm not sure where this figure is coming from. I think everyone (except for Montreal and Toronto fans) could see this coming considering it's Sharks management we're talking about. It wouldn't make sense for them not to offer Patty an extension as he is an integral part of the team.

That said, it is a two-year contract which tells me they are expecting a Cup (or at least a Finals appearance) in that time or he is probably gone when the contract expires. A trade may happen sooner if we don't get further this year than last.

  10. Wings19 says:

Ya my mistake. He gets 4.5 million next year because of his old contract and 6.3 million the next two years after that.

  11. prayin-for-the-wce says:

No this is the last year of his contract at 4.5.  His contract for 6.3 starts the following year and is for a total of 2 years for the new contract.

  12. habsoverserver says:

why should this matter, montreal is getting selanne and toronto is getting spezza.  done deals according to some of the savvy posters on this site.  plus malkin (pen's can't afford him) cammillari (la doesn't really want him) iginla (he needs a big market team) forsberg (always wanted to play for an orginal six) gionta (loves poutine)  kovalchuk (been obsessed with the cn tower since childhood)  pronger (wife hates california) lecavalier (owns a balloonagram business near the old Forum)  and heatley (dances offseason with the Toronto Ballet)  are all far more likely to come to Montreal or Toronto.

  13. EddieAVS says:

i have to admit, even though im at work, i actually laughed out loud when i read …gionta (loves poutine). that was great, classic.

  14. nordiques100 says:

it is laughable how fans of both those teams thing its a done deal with these players taht they are coming. face it, neither one of those teams has attracted a top player to come to their city to play since……what seems like forever.

at the top of my head i would guess Roy was the last top 5 player to play in montreal and the closest thing the leafs had to a top 5 player would probably have been Gilmour in the early 90s. (Sundin isnt, has not been a top 5 player in the NHL….top 20 yes, top 5 no)

to guarantee the arrivals of malkin, spezza, heatley etc etc has to be some of the dumbest assumptions ever.

If you couldn't tell he was being sarcastic…

  16. flamingsenator says:

am i the only one who thinks he got overpaid at 6.3?

  18. Motherpucker says:

Hopefully this puts to bed the "rumors" of him being shipped out of town.  I almost vomited a couple of weeks ago when Dan "the douchebag" Blakeley and Mike "never laced up the skates but know more than you" Ross of XM 204 speculated he was going to Toronto for Pavel Kubina and Andrew Raycroft.

    Great signing by San Jose.

  19. rtpuckhog says:

I would have to say yes.

Why do you think so? Considering the contracts that Briere, Drury, and Gomez signed this year, it sounds like 6.3Mil is a lowball offer to a guy of his caliber. You gotta admit he is one of the more complete players in the league and he's committed to his team and the community. I think he's proven his worth, he just needs to bring home the Cup.

  20. CaptainAvery says:

I could care less if the Habs got him, Marleau ain't gonna bring a cup to San Jose anyways, he ain't no Sakic, Yzerman, Niedermeyer…. so have fun San Jose with a bust in the playoffs for another 3 more years, and Gainey, bullshit you tried trading for him, go for someone worth our time and none of these asshole G.M.'s like Doug Wilson *****ing us around dangling him then signing him to an extension. But ***** it, Habs all the way, GO HABS GO!

  21. nordiques100 says:

yeah i know…….i'm agreeing with him

  22. flamingsenator says:

hes a great player…ill never knock that

im saying…..the signings of gomez and co. shouldnt justify anything……
so wat if gomez got GROSSLY overpaid……im saying…guys like iginla and thornton took 2 mil pay cuts to stay with the team…yet no one follows THOSE examples

quiet captains like marleau lead by example….i just feel hes not doing it

if everyone feels like he deserves the contract….thats cool….just that my 2 cents is that hes worth no more that 5.3….maybe 5.5

  23. rtpuckhog says:

I totally agree with you about Gomez, Drury and Briere's contracts, way overpaid. But my thought on Marleau is that he probably could've gotten 7 Million somewhere else next year based on those 3 signings, and some more reasonable contracts around the league. Remember, Thornton did take a pay cut that would have put him in the 8-9M range (11M if you base it solely on the 3 above), so 6.3 for the teams second leading scorer (last year), team captain, and owner of many team records, is pretty accurate these days.

What I think we're seeing is inflation in the actual value of key players. Remember when the top paid goaltenders were worth about 2-3M/yr.? Now it's about 4-5M. This is a similar step. Revenues are up so there's more money to play with. At the same time, the players are actually worth a little more than their previous contract, as long as they have produced the same or better during that time. Doesn't sound like you factored this in.

  24. rtpuckhog says:

Sounds like your pissed cause the Habs are a shell of their former selves. Wilson never had any intention of trading Marleau, it's everyone who tried reading in to our early exit from the playoffs, and all the Hab hopefuls, like yourself.

You mind cleaning the basement while your down there?
