Now they have a GM that alienates the Sedin twins by saying that they aren't first line players, let's Naslund go for nothing, and offers way too much money to Sundin, who is an awesome player, even at his age, but shouldn't be making more than Crosby, Ovechkin, Iginla, and many others. He would give any team looking for an impact player, a lift, but not at $10 million/year. Gillis would have served the team and it's fans better by using that money to get 2 or 3 players that would be around 2 to 3 years that could fill holes until the prospects are ready!]]>
Depth at forward and defence definitely goes to Mtl. The pro scouts, not Habs fans say that Vancouver needs to build up their depth, that they don't have much in the system. Vancouver is a lot like Mtl was 5 seasons past. The loss of Bourdon was terrible and huge! Gillis has alienated the Sedin twins saying he doesn't think they are 1st line players and he wants to trade one of their best defencemen.
As much as I think Sundin would enhance Mtl's chances in the play offs, I don't think he would have the same impact in Vancouver. They don't have the supporting cast to make spending $10 million a season on him worth while. That money is totally ridiculous. Gillis is just trying to make a splash and not really addressing the needs of the team. With that money he could have tried to get 2 or 3 players that would have made the team better. Wellwood may make the 2nd line, but he isn't very durable.
There are a few other teams that have the pieces in place that Sundin would compliment, but Detroit is out with the signing of Hossa, and I am not sure if anyone else has made a serious offer to him. He would look good in Boston, especially if Bergeron does come back.
Let's have a reality check. Barring injury, Mtl does ahve a team that can content for the cup. I base that on the fact that they have offence, good defence, and Price should prove to be a solid goaltender. They should make the play offs and once in, anything can happen. They will be better for the experience of last season.
I think you misunderstand when people compare them to Detroit. We aren't saying that they will be the next Detroit, only that they are styling thier game after them. Speed and puck control because they finally have the players that can play that way!]]>
