Huge – Kane and Bogosian to Sabres for Brendan Lemieux, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia and Tyler Myers plus a late 1st round pick.

its been a while since we had a hockey trade right? at least with this many players?

now back to the Clarkson healthy scratch watch.

I am curious to see if this kick starts things through the league. It is way bigger then I thought, but it is nice. Like this deal for both teams though. Scary to think of Kane with McDavid, really all that talent and if he pulls it together a guy with that skill beside him.

          • Steven_Leafs0 says:

Such a nice deal for both teams. Buffalo has the chance to really win this deal if Bogosian becomes a top pairing defenseman and Kane becomes a top pairing winger but Winnipeg really got a good return.

Short term it was the perfect trade for both teams.

          • nordiques100 says:

i think that is what the teams were waiting for. a shoe to drop.

but, there may need to be one of the rentals that needs to get traded for that market to start going.

that means a guy like Franson or Vermette need to go, before guys like Santo or Winnik get moved.

I am hopeful the Leafs will be busy. Kypreos, Dreger and many others are predicting about 5 moves at least by the Leafs the way they have been actively shopping players.

Obviously, the start from scratch mode isn’t fool proof. We’ve seen how Edmonton has been and other teams. But, again, it can’t be said enough, the Leafs as an organization has not proceeded in that fashion before.

They have not tried to move veterans for young assets and more specifically draft picks and building via the draft. I really hope they go through with it, but half of me tells me that they’ll run out of patience and one minute trade Kessel, the next, they move Nylander and Rielly for the quick fix. I think a lot of Leaf fans have trouble shaking off those doubts.

Am I the only one insanely jealous of being a Sabres fan right now?

    • nordiques100 says:

well again, will they be like Pittsburgh, the Blackhawks who go for lean years to contention to cup win or will they be Edmonton?

Its too early to say for sure.

But they have great pieces in place and are in great position to get “that guy” a la Crosby or Toews to put them in a stronger spot.

Right now, they have the same pieces like Edmonton. McEichel will put them over.

      • LN91 says:

If they get McEichel, I will say more Pitt then Edmonton.

        3 reasons:

        1) They have defence, blue chip prospects on defence, and depth on defence.

        2) Organizational depth. Depth down the middle, wing, and defence once again.

        3) Size. Most of there prospects and players have size, unlike Edmonton. McEichel brings size as well.

  3. nordiques100 says:

    Breaking news!! Jeoffrey Lupul………hurt AGAIN!

now back to your regularly scheduled Horacek vs Clarkson watch.

  4. LN91 says:

If Buffalo gets McDavid, watch out Eastern Conference.

Bad enough I’m already scared of Florida.

    Toronto should take notes…

  5. LN91 says:

People fail to mention…This is a very good deal for Winnipeg too.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Really? Stafford is basically Connolly and Myers cheaper Phaneuf.

      • LN91 says:

Stanford at 2- million opposed to Connolly at 4.5? (As Buffalo is retaining 2 million in salary).

Not to mention Myers at 5.4 opposed to Phaneuf at 7?

        What scenario is better?

        • leafs_wallace93 says:

Yeah but given what Connolly cost (no assets) or Phaneuf (Hagland and other losers)?

Kane and Bogosian two top five picks.

          • LN91 says:

            Well…

Kane was a locker room cancer obviously, and team morale is boosted. Not to mention he only played in 37 games this season (injury) and only had 22 points.

Bogosian, like Kane has been injury prone and has not really contributed to Winnipeg.

They have for the most part built this season without them. Not to mention, added 2 players that will step in…And acquired a first round pick, a blue chip prospect in Lemieux and a solid prospect in Armia.

  6. doorman says:

This trade really is a win-win IMO. this is a true hockey trade and I hope it works for both teams. The Sabres will be scary if Bogo can stay healthy and Kane will give the Sabres new stud room to move and a legit scoring threat. If this doesn’t motivate him, he is truly a lost cause.

I am hoping the over under on 5 is about right. That will signal more changes coming I think. It’ll be interesting to see what we get. I like the idea of the gates opening and hope we fair well in a deep draft. This is where ammo to move up and a competent scouting staff come in so very handy. Depending the return this could be the start of an actual rebuild that many of us have been craving. I have no fear they will break into old habits and trade Rielly/Nylander, these guys are here. The five makes me wonder who the other two players they seem to think will move are though.

  7. leafs_wallace93 says:

Tor Phaneuf + Bernier + Carolina’s choice of Bozak or Kadri

    Car 2015 1st + Semin + Ward

  8. 93killer93 says:

I’m always hesitant to trust an Eklund Leafs rumour, but I have to admit this caught my attention.

“I am also hearing the Leafs have talked to Tampa about Jonathan Drouin…Tampa wants Rielly, that appears to be a non-starter…however the teams are still talking….Tampa was in on Tyler Myers as well.”

    • LN91 says:

I was never really fond of Drouin, I always thought he was a bit overhyped.

      • 93killer93 says:

I’m not that big of a Drouin fan, but if we can get him for something around one of our defenceman that’s not Rielly, I would take the chance. Worst case scenario he’s a young cost controlled asset that can be easily moved.

        • Gambo says:

Yeah I’d move any of the Dmen besides Rielly for him.

          • 93killer93 says:

Apparently they were interested in Myers. Given his age and salary I would think a deal around Gardiner would be a comparable if they can get a deal done.

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Yup and if they end up trading him for a defense when they could have had Jones? Yzerman isn’t exactly earning that genius reputation.

        • LN91 says:

Yzerman has been a very good GM.

They are looking for defence because they’re banged up back there, not because they have a terrible Players.

    • nordiques100 says:

why would the Leafs want yet another smallish skilled winger?

Drouin is an excellent young player but that’s not what Toronto needs at all. especially at the expense of the Leafs best assets.

Does that not go in the face of being patient with draft picks and prospects trading Reilly for Drouin? The stuff these people come up with. i don’t know.

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Trading Rielly has to be off the table unless it’s for a stud 1C or 1D.

As for Drouin, if we’re trading Kessel and Lupul we’ll need a skill winger in the big picture.

        • nordiques100 says:

          Nylander.

he is not my idea of a centre. he is more Marty St. Louis if anything.

          • LN91 says:

I’ve seen a few games where he played wing, did not look very good.

He does play his beat down the middle, but I agree, unless he’s Crosby the Leafa need some size.

          • leafs_wallace93 says:

More than one winger and as fun as Nylander has been, who knows what he’ll develop into.

  9. Gambo says:

I agree that he might have been a little overhyped, but he has the potential to be a 90+ point player. If Kessel is to be traded it would be nice to have a player like Drouin to hopefully replace him.

    • doorman says:

Good read and gives me hope that they will try and redo this the right way. I for one am more then prepared for a rebuild the right way, it will be less painful then what this team has been doing forever and a day.

Not sure about Babcock still, I get why he would want to and money won’t be the object for sure. Everyone has an ego and his is up there for sure. If he wants to be the Scotty Bowman of his generation, well winning here would do that.

  10. LN91 says:

It’s great to state reasons why Babcock would come here, but it’s not happening at all.

He’s not a coaching option, so who do you hire?

  11. doorman says:

    Jeff Blashill

  12. LN91 says:

What does the Kane trade suggest about the value of Kessel? Thoughts?

    • doorman says:

Says to me that a player we all see with an attitude problem and possibly as a team problem is worth more then what most think. Kane has scored 30G once an has trouble staying healthy and people question his drive. People say the same things about Kessel except h score 30+ over and over and is the 3rd leading scorer in the league over the last 4yars I believe I read. On an off year as this he will still be a top 20 scorer and probably hit 30G again. Heavy cap hit or not elite scorers don’t grow on trees and some GM will pony up to acquire him, IMO. I think most will be surprised with how good we make out from dealing hi.
