Update on Heatley Situation: Allowed to attend Funeral

According to TSN.ca, Dany Heatley has been granted the right to go see teammate Dan Snyder’s funeral. Fulton County Magistrate Richard Hicks agreed today that the 22-year-old Heatley may attend Snyder’s funeral Friday in Elmira, Ontario, with the rest of the team.

Snyder died just 6 days after he had been in a horrific car crash with Dany Heatley, when they went out of control, which ended up splitting the car in half.

A spokesman for the district attorney’s office, Erik Friedly, says the vehicular homicide charge was based on a preliminary finding that Heatley was driving recklessly. It carries a prison sentence of three to 15 years.

Heatley will return to the hospital for knee surgery, after his has a brief break to see his family and friends. His attorney, Ed Garland, has said that Dany is “an emotional wreck”, and why wouldn’t he be.

This may end up delaying Thursday night’s season opener for Atlanta.

Not that it is all that important, but the game should be a go on Thursday. The Snyder family has apparently urged the team not to cancel the game.

They are making too big of a deal about the game. They should be making a big deal out of the death, and are, it is really horrible. But, this shouldn’t delay it, but it really isn’t that important.

Around Atlanta, I haven’t heard one thing about delaying the game. Neither have others I talk to who have much, much more reliable sources about such things.

The game is slated to go on. The team will then quickly fly up for the funeral.

Is anyone else here going to the game? I am anxious to experience the mood of the whole arena. I know they are going to have a moment of silence before the game but will there be anything else. How much do you do in honor of Snyder without getting the team too depressed?

Also, has anyone heard anything about the Thrashers debuting their third jerseys during the game? During the 2001-2002 season I heard that the Thrashers were developing a blue third jersey with just the head of the bird on it (like the one that shoots fire at the games) and then I heard during the summer that they were going to debut during the last pre season game but that didn’t happen so I was just wondering if maybe they would bring them out for the first game.
