Voice of the Rangers-Jim Gordon–RIP

For those of you who grew up in the New York area and learned about hockey watching the Rangers on WOR-TV Channel 9 (when they were a competitive team and not the Ranger$ that we know today) Monday marked a very sad day.

The hockey world lost a pioneer when Jim Gordon the legendary “Voice of the New York Rangers” TV announcer passed away Monday at the age of 76 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Gordon, who formed a popular tandem with former NHL referee Bill “The Big Whistle” Chadwick in the Rangers television booth, called Ranger games from 1969 to 1984 after beginning his broadcasting legacy with Madison Square Garden in 1955.

Gordon and Chadwick were one of the best pairings in any sport: they were informative, colorful, outspoken and loved the game. Gordon always played the informative, fact driven straight man and Chadwick was the passionate and emotional pseudo-fan.

The hockey world lost a great man and my condolences go to the Gordon Family.

The fact that you acknowledged Jim Gordon is very nice. He and Chadwick were, indeed, a great pair. the knock on the team was a bit uncalled for though.

to people like me who grew up listening to Jim Gordon call the games, who needed hockey as an escape from a tough life…this is news worth listening to. Maybe not for people outside of the Rangers hockey world, but believe or not, there are people who care about this piece of news.
