Wayne Gretzky's trophy

There is a trophy for most points and most goals but why not one for assists? Assists are just as important in a game of hockey as a goal, without an assist most of the times there is no goal. It would be named after Wayne Gretzky the most prolific passer ever to play the game. What do you think?

Its a great idea but it wont happen.

Most people rarely give enough credit, if any, to assists.

Marc Savard is a perfect example. He has averaged about 70 assists over the last 3 seasons and no one ever speaks of him when referring to some of the leagues top end players.

Crosby, who has twice as many assists than goals, constantly has the "needs to score more to be considered great" tab on him.

Scott Cullen (from TSN) when doing his player rankings, puts more stock in goals than assists.

You cant have one without the other, in most situations.

I Couldnt agree more….                                                                                                                                                            Assists should be recognized at the end of the year,  Gretzky does not have a trophy named after him yet; this makes perfect sence.

Its true. A person who gets a lot of assists is someone who really dominates the game and has the puck on his stick all the time.

A lot of people will argue that a lot of 2nd assists (especially on the PP) aren't as deserving as a 1st assist most of the time. This was being argued on the Score's "Hard Core Hockey Talk". To me its true, the person who leads the NHL in assists typically leads the NHL in 2nd assists, whether its Crosby or Thornton which has been the case the last few seasons. However if you're getting SO MANY 2nd assists that you lead the NHL in assists, it is because you have the puck on your stick all the time and you're dominating the play.

Personally my best seasons of hockey have been years where in 30 games I put up like 12 goals and 25 assists. When I was a kid I scored 24 goals and 10 assists one season leading the league in goals and my teammates said that that was my best season, but I always thought I dominated the play more when I ended up with more assists.

If you get my drift, sorry for the rant that happens sometimes though.

I will play the devils advocate here, but assists don't happen unless someone puts the puck in the net. So there is no way assists are as important as goals! Some goals are scored without assists! No assists are scored without goals! You don't win games if you have more assists then the other team.
You will argue that with a perfect pass u dont even have to shoot to score, which is true (ex: Kovalev's pass on the PP the other day) but the other player still has to be there and somewhat touch the puck to put it in!
But I do agree, there could and maybe should be a trophy for assists in a season. Although Thornton would win it for the next 5 seasons….

An "Assists" trophy for the great one is an insult, not a compliment to his legacy. You don't score 92 goals in one season and then have a helper trophy assigned to you. You don't net 50 G's in 37 games and have an ASSIST trophy named after you.

Leave an assist trophy to Ron Francis or Adam Oates.

There is no point in having a trophy named after Wayner anyway, since he'd be the only player ever worthy of winning such a thing. Why have a blank trophy every year? The Wayne Gretzky Trophy would be a Trophy for being the greatest player of all-time. And take a flying leap as to who its permanant owner would be? Yeah, that's right. So it's pointless. Unless you want to rename every forward trophy in the game to Wayne Trophy No.1, No.2, No.3… etc…don't even bother proposing anything else.

Does it not make better sense to simply rename the Art Ross trophy after Gretzky?

  9. mojo19 says:

traditionalists want to kill you for that comment.

  10. leafy says:

We can't live in the past. Who the heck was Art Ross anyway? Most people don't know and don't care.

Same thing with renaming the Adams trophy after Scotty Bowman. The idea has been tossed around and makes perfect sense.

  11. leafy says:

Although I have to admit, there's some really impressive history with Art Ross. Below is a summary of his legacy.

  12. Kramer says:

The Leafs need to get 4 more defencemen.

  13. the_word says:

How about getting rid of every award expect the Calder and rename it the Rookie of the Year, the Hart and the Conn Smyth in order to resemble a legitimate professional league.

  14. mojo19 says:

Pretty interesting, he twice fought to keep a salary cap out of the league in the 1910's.

Also interesting that the award for the NHL scoring title is named after a rugged stay home blueliner.

Also you've convinced me Leafy, I hate Art Ross, why should the NHL's scoring trophy be named after a guy who played on a 3 time Cup winning Ottawa Senators team??? We should change the name to the Darryl Sittler award even though he never won it, at least he played for the Leafs!

  15. mojo19 says:

Defensmen are to Cliff Fletcher, what Pitching is to JP Riccardi

  16. mojo19 says:

So you think the Leagues top rookie, top player and playoff MVP are the only one's who deserve awards?

Some awards like the King Clancy and Masterton aren't important awards. You could argue that the Lester B. Pearson is a little redundant. The Selke is a great award but it does come down to opinion a lot of years (so do the Calder, Conn Smythe and Hart, but Selke more so), and I gues a lot of people don't care for the Lady Byng.

However they should keep the Norris and Vezina also without any debate, that's key. Or if you suggest to get rid of a bunch of awards how about instead of the Hart make it the best forward only, then the best defensman and best goalie, so 3 mvp's…

Jack Adams is a good one too but opinion comes into play a lot I guess…

  17. the_word says:

My bad, keep Jack Adams, but again rename it.

  18. repetitivnegativ says:

Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr don't need trophies named after them, however I think it would be interesting trivia to add a Cam Neely Award for best power forward. The requirements could be at least 30 goals, 150 hits, 80 pim, and five fights.

  19. leafy says:

Haha!  It sounds strange to hear "Cup winning Senators team".  Something odd with that.

Actually Mojo, you convinced me, Art Ross was pioneer.  He came up with the idea of making pucks out of synthetic rubber instead of natural rubber, which provided more consistency.

Also, it was Ross' idea to make the net B-shaped like it is today, which cut down on dangerous rebounds coming out from the back of the net.  Very impressive legacy.

  20. leafy says:

If we had any more defensemen, we would have to hold a garage sale to get rid of several.  I mean literally.

  21. mojo19 says:

So should you start the petition to change it to "Darryl Sittler Trophey" or should I?

  22. mojo19 says:

Jarome Iginla would own that award

  23. hockey_lover says:

I cant even begin to wrap my head around how silly this post sounds.

  24. repetitivnegativ says:

I almost added that exact statement

  25. Radio says:

If only the NHL gave out an award that was in some way postively related to fighting. I'd feel better then about the odds of it not being banned 10 years from now.
