(1) You think they can get Gomez and a Draft pick for Belfour??? Belfour probably makes more $$ than NJ starter Brodeur. Try to think of it this way. Would any sane hockey minded GM of NJ make that trade?? OF COURSE NOT! and Not Lou!
(2) You think the Leafs would be able to sign a significant starting goalie (Aebischer or Roloson), All Star Defenseman (Redden), US Olympic Defenseman (Leopold), Team Pts Leader (Gaborik) ??? ALL IN THE SAME SUMMER??? You have been playing X-Box too much
(3) What sane hockey mind would let your perennial best player and long time team captain (Sundin) walk away, the city’s (and owner’s) favourite player (Domi) retire after signing him to a 2 year deal …Oh ya, then another Miracle trade to get rid of two of your top 6 defenseman.
There is no sense to your suggestion, I would bet the Leafs do NONE of what you suggest …which is why you are not an NHL GM.]]>
but could you imagine if the Nolan trade didn’t take place?? i know hindsight is 20/20 but toronto lost out big time on this one. Toronto would have McCauley, Boyes, and they would have had their first round pick from 2003 which turned out to be Mark Stuart – one of the top defensive prospects in the Boston organization (he was also chosen ahead of such names as Pouliot, Mike Richards, Patrick Eves, Corey Perry (!!!), Anthony Stewart and Jeff Tambellini).
That means: no Lindros, no O’Neill, etc. not to mention some of the younger players listed above that could be playing with the Leafs right now.
but on the other hand, many of these kinds of moves to bring in older guys and trading away young guys DID work out and helped toronto be a 1st place team for a number of years.]]>
