Which team is the most/least exciting in the NHL?

Which teams do you think are the most exciting to watch in the NHL?
Which teams do you think are the least exciting to watch in the NHL?
Which teams do you think will be exciting in the future, starting next year?

Which teams, aside from your favorite, can you actually tolerate watching an entire game of?

Personally, these days I find the East to be a hell of a lot more exciting than the West. There are few Western teams, and even few Western playoff teams, that I enjoy watching on a regular basis, and usually have difficulty sitting through an entire game. The playoffs are a different matter entirely, though.

My selection of the Top 5 Most Exciting NHL Teams:

Pittsburgh Penguins
Detroit Red Wings
Montreal Canadiens
Philadelphia Flyers
Calgary Flames/Colorado Avalanche (can’t decide)

Honorable mentions: Washington Capitals (Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Green, etc.), Chicago Blackhawks (when healthy), Toronto Maple Leafs (good for a laugh, but all joking aside, division games are always intense, and you never know what the Leafs will do in a game).

My selection of the Top 5 Most Boring NHL Teams:

NJ Devils
Vancouver Canucks
Florida Panthers
NY Islanders
Minnesota Wild

Honorable mentions: SJ Sharks (I’m almost always bored watching their stifling Devils-like play), Atlanta Thrashers (when Kovalchuk is off his game, and even when he’s not), St. Louis Blues (a handful of others teams could have taken this last spot).

My selection of teams that will soon be exciting to watch:

LA Kings (So much young talent. The new Penguins, soon.)
Chicago Blackhawks (Same as Kings)
Columbus Blue Jackets (Brassard [could be a Brule though] and Voracek coming soon full-time could give them enough to finally make the playoffs)

I will give you one thing…

The East has gotten way more exciting to watch the last couple of years. Teams like Buffalo and now the Pens paved the way for some less Jersey-style hockey.

I am looking at the standings and trying to decide which Eastern teams are legitimate threats to win the cup. Probably four of the eight teams who will make it would not have made the playoffs if they played in the West. Is Montreal for real this year? Can Pittsburgh win with Conklin when the chips are down? Maybe if Brodeur can stand on his head then NJ can bore their way to another one, but I just can’t see the east pulling it off.

Malkin couldn't carry Kovalevs jocks trap.

  4. Radio says:

As someone else also mentioned, Boston is really boring too. The onyl reason I don't include them is because they tend to torch the Sens from time to time, thus opening up their super-defensive style a bit. outside of that I never watch Boston games.

Where is edmonton on the soon to be exciting teams list????
They have the biggest future out of all the NHL, with Gagner,Cogliano,Gilbert,Nilsson,Smid,Grebeshkov,Shremp,Plante,Chorney,O'marra.

Easy answer. They are all boring. Thanks to the new rules since the lockout we have been treated to 15 powerplays per game waiting for the players to adjust. Meaning that for 30 minutes out of 60 we endured defensemen blasting shots wide of the net then the other team shoots it down the ice. Riveting.
As the seasons passed the players have learned that you don't touch another player above the waist with your stick or shoot it over the glass or take one hand off the stick and touch another player.
I'm sorry I don't have unconditional love for the game but my game used to be entertaining. Players had to earn their goals and they deserved their penalties. How did hockey get to be less physical than basketball. Hmmmm?

interesting comments about the habbies. i think everyone assumed that with a gainey/carbo tandem, the habs would look to play suffocating D hockey.

but i guess the team's personnel dictated otherwise. you've got guys like kovalev, markov, plekanec, kostitsyn, koivu, streit, grabovski…makes no sense to play defense with offensively gifted players like that. personally, i don't care how exciting or boring they are if they win, but it's nice to see them able to score goals consistently.

the team today reminds me of our teams from the early '90s. no offensive superstar, but plenty of guys who can put the puck in the net (like damphousse, muller, bellows, leclair,) and a solid, unspectacular but deep blueline (schneider, desjardins, brisebois)

one thing though: we're missing roy and carbonneau!

Good comment about the other teams as well. But the one thing I notice about all teams is that they win with the same great core of players.

    Detroit: Zetterburg, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, etc

    Ottawa: Redden, Spezza, Heatley, Alfreddson

San Jose: Thornton, Nabokov, Marleau, Cheechoo

    Dallas: Modano, Turco, Zubov

Over the years, New Jersey has consistentley seem to lose their great players. Ex. Rafalski to Detroit, Gomez to New York and Niedermayer to the Ducks. Those teams had minor losses of players like Chara or Schneider, but NJ seems to always lose their top tier players. And they are still a contender in the NHL.  Which is why I consider them at the top.

WOW!  It took 3/4 of the page to find something on the Coyotes future!  A team that wasn't expected to finish anywhere near .500, that challenged for a playoff spot.  I think they will be good for a few years to come.  WITH DOAN leading them!  He has 10+ seasons of 20+goals and leads by example.  Who wrote that post?  AVERY???

Did Linden sleep with your girlfriend or something? I've never heard someone from vancouver who hates the canucks so much.

  11. BruMagnus says:

If so, that would be the most exciting thing outta Vancouver in years.

    No, sadly, Linden is impotent.

  12. BruMagnus says:

That first matchup is only exciting cause the Flames are there (ironically one of my top 5 picks), whereas the second game is because BOTH teams are.

  13. BruMagnus says:

My Canucks friend even said if Vancouver was in the East they'd be a bottom feeder. The Canucks on paper (sans Luongo) or hardly better than the Panthers on paper (sans Luongo) and with Luongo the Panthers never made the playoffs. The Canucks may not even make it this year in the West with Luongo.

  14. BruMagnus says:

    JOCKS?!?!

    Does Kovalev suffer from Diphallia?

  15. BruMagnus says:

Ya I considered putting them on there as well.
They'll be exciting also. Coulda taken CBJ's spot, but I got a softspot for CBJ. LA and Chicago have the bigger futures though, and maybe CBJ.

  16. Hoondog2 says:

you're also missing good N.A. players.  Watch as the Euros disappear in the playoffs.

  17. Hoondog2 says:

The Euro Canadiens suck!!!! Price looks calm because he is not very intelligent. ahhh where did da puck go? Oh, dey shot it in ma mit! This guy is a dud as far as personality goes. Not a bad goalie, but not very bright.

  18. FrankTheTank3388 says:

So much for the oldest rivalry in the NHL, Boston vs Montreal…

Most exciting team to watch is by far Washington though, Ovechkin simply is the most exciting player in the NHL, no ifs ands or buts.

  19. NHLman says:

Pittsburgh is an exciting team to watch… for the other team's fans. They cough up the puck, which leads to odd man rushes, it's great. The way Pittsburgh plays defense is essentially how Gary Bettman envisioned the new NHL; wide open play with no discernible defensive system.

  20. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

ohhh please ur sooo bias for the devils.  ur username says it all…exit 16W off the turnpike is a dump anyway hahahaha the devils r flat out the most boring team to watch id rather watch grass grow or watch 2 old blind guys play chess.  they cant even beat the freaking rangers sooo please please stop joking around.  its annoying enough that chico resche is the WORST color commentator ever and doc emrick gets repeditive…throw it all together and the game is overall torchure id rather go to the dentist and get all my teeth pulled without novicane

  21. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

both teams along with columbus and florida should be canned they take up teams that could be in better, more appreciative markets

  22. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

u forgot about good old evgeni malkin

  23. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

im telling u once brodeur is gone, its just over…soo enjoy while u can…because soon enough, they will be the laughing stock again

  24. svenki says:

Van may be a boring team due to lack of scoring but divisional games are always exciting to watch, just as the one where they faced the Oilers a few weeks back

  27. BruMagnus says:

Well reasoned, written and thought out.

  28. BruMagnus says:

I can tell you are from the West as you only have one Eastern team in each list.
I recommend watching an upcoming Penguins vs Flyers game, it'll change your mind.

  29. BruMagnus says:

    Interesting.

    Why the Thrashers?

  30. AHLoldie says:

What do you expect from Boston?  Their coach coached that trapping menagerie from Jersey last year, and has cloned the Bruins into another boring team that fans will soon tire of watching.

  31. AHLoldie says:

I just got home from the Pens /Devils game which the Pens won 7 to 1.  This was a classic BORING Devils game after two periods.  Each team had a SH goal, and the Devils put one in their own net.  They were TRAPPING, TRAPPING, TRAPPING!  The Devils never try to score.  They wait for YOU to make a mistake.  Once the Pens got the lead, the Devils were exposed for what they are.  A MEDIOCRE TEAM!  When they have to play regular hockey, they are incapable of doing anything.  They got blown out.  Brodeur was pulled because he didn't have the defensive shell around him in the third period.  They brought Weekes in to save Brodeur the embarassment of being scored on.  If I was Weekes, I would've told Sutter to stick it!

  32. SuperStastny says:

To me, they seem to have a mess of great talent. Kovalchuk is still in his prime and will continue to be dominant, they hands down got the better end of the stick in that Hossa trade. Christensen and Armstrong are great young players, now they wont put up crazy points but they are good depth players and will help this team out. They also got Esposito. Now I'm from PEI and have seen this kid play a ton of times in the qmjhl and let me tell you, he is one hell of a player and I know he will be a superstar someday. i dont know why he was picked so late in the draft. Lehtonen when he's healthy is a solid goaltender. With more experience and confidence, he will be a dominant goaltender in the years to come. Slava Zozlov is having a horrible year, but I feel he will rebound next season and will fill the skates of the departed Hossa. Anyway, thats what i feel about this team. A good mix of young and veteran players, lots of skill and speed.

  33. BruMagnus says:

You've only named two players (Kovalchuk and Esposito) who are Top Six players… that comes nowhere near Chicago, Edmonton, LA or even CBJ…

Hossa is ripping it up in Pitty now that he's healthy, and after a slow start DUpuis has like 10 points in 9 games or something.

We have lots of talen to fill in for the losses we had.

    We won the trade.

Hey buuudddy!!! BY THE WAY the Devils haven't had a great defensemen since 2003-2004 when they had Niedermayer and Stevens!!!!

I know they had Rafalski but he's not a "great" defensemen and beside who have they had on D for the last 3 years HEY BUDDY!!! Oduya,Rachunek,White,Green,Matvichuk,Martin etc. Brodeur is top 5 in all categories of goaltenders and you tell me he's not great he's just a good goalie.
You know nothing about hockey!!!! Brodeur has been getting 25+shots per game often now and you say that he gets 20shots per game!!! Ohhhh ya can you tell me why the analyst keep mentioning Brodeur for the Hart trophy, its definetly not because he sucks?

In my book Roy,Brodeur and Hasek are the top 3 goalies of our decade!!!

I can't believe you think Brodeur is over-rated, wow your one dumb s.o.b.!!!

    Peace out!!!!
