Believe me I'm far from being a habs fan, but I think that Koivu has proven that he can be their number one guy and has earned his spot in Montreal. To bring a guy up from lower spot or a prospect who plays better to take over is one thing, but to go out and shop for a new number one center is a spit in the face to the captain, the team's LEADER and major factor off the ice and usually on the ice.

They have plenty of grit on their 3rd/4th lines and on defense. They need a big body on the top two lines and Avery is not only a top liner, but a garbage player. The team doesn't need him, especially Montreal after the French comment by Avery.

Hab's lineup next season without Aucoin and our players resigned:

Higgins-Koivu - Ryder
Latendresse - Plekanec - Kovalev
Samsonov - Bonk - Johnson
Perezhogin/Murray - Lapierre/Begin - Striet/Downey

Markov - Souray - Boullion, Komisarek, Rivet, Dandenault

Huet
Halak/Danis

Cap Space: Zero

Habs lineup without Samsonov, with Aucoin and without Souray:

Higgins - Koivu - Ryder
Latendresse - Plekanec - Kovalev
Perezhogin - Bonk - Johnson
Murray - Lapierre/Begin - Striet/Downey

Markov - Aucoin - Boullion, Komisarek, Rivet, Dandenault

Huet
Halak/Danis

Cap Space: $3-6 million

This decreases the team's production from the blueline but gives Gainey some cap room to sign a top line forward (also keep in mind that Kostitsyn could crack the lineup next year). This way, the team's offensive production is a lot more balanced. The risk is that Gainey may not get the player he wants and the roster ends up worse than this year's.

Wat i do no MODK09 is that the habs are SOFT they need GRIT….And i like the way avery plays, he has more points then higgins,samsonov and pletanic.,while playing for a crap team…..When was the last time you saw any of those three HIT SOME1. And our d sucks…..Do u think the habs should pay 6 million to keep him YOUR NUTS……what good is a 6million$ slap shot when at any given time the other team can walk around him.Id take a well rounded d man over him any day…ship him out now while hes worth something……So i think i no more then u give me credit for

Markov BETTER than Kabby? I don't think so, I'd say about even. No disrespect to Markov he's a great defenseman but no better than Kaberle. Kaberle brings more to the table offensively, he's one of the best passers in the game. He's come a long way from his early all offense ways too. He is one of the most complete players on this leaf team and his panic threshold is probably the best in the league. That being said I don't think he is as defensive as Markov which I would say evens it out but theyre both amazing. But you make a good point anyway.

would you also take McCabe over Kaberle? because Markov is a MUCH better player than Kaberle is and Souray and McCabe is about even, but no one would rather have mcCabe over Kaberle.

The thing with Markov is that unless youre a defenceman yourself, you dont understand that he basically makes no mistakes. his positioning is almost perfect no matter where he is on the ice and his 1-on-1 work is impecable. That being said, I really hope they find a way to get both under the cap, especially if it means trading samsonov and/or kovalev
