Minnesota forward and ex-Buffalo teammate Jason Pominville said he’s asked daily about the prospects of Vanek rejoining him.
Vanek understands the interest but didn’t get asked about it much while he was home.
I'm told, without detail, #Leafs could be working on trade involving D that will clear some cap space and ensure Morgan Rielly stays.

Almost daily, Jason Pominville will get recognized around the Twin Cities. He’s always flattered, although inevitably the Wild winger knows where the conversation will usually end up.
It takes mere minutes for hockey-mad Wild and Gophers fans to ask Pominville if his former Buffalo Sabres teammate, Thomas Vanek, will soon be reuniting with him in Minnesota.
Pretty much everybody feels winger Thomas Vanek will be leaving the Buffalo Sabres at season’s end and may take a pay-cut to play in Minnesota, where he went to school. The tie-in is also Vanek’s Buffalo buddy Jason Pominville, who just got a five-year deal with the Minnesota Wild.
The Leafs are over the salary cap, even if by several hundred thousand dollars, and they probably will have to do some deking before the final roster is submitted to the NHL on Monday.
It hurts that David Clarkson’s salary will count against the cap as he serves his 10-game suspension, and it’s almost a sure bet the Leafs will have fewer players to start than the 23-man roster allows.
“We probably will,” Loiselle said. “We’re going to ice the best team possible and the coach makes those decisions, and we will start the season. We have to start the season with no less than 18 (skaters) and two (goalies).”
An NHL source has confirmed to FoxSportsDetroit.com that the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators have discussed sending Jordin Tootoo back to Music City.
Tootoo was drafted by Nashville in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and spent the first eight years of his NHL career with the Predators. The Wings signed him as an unrestricted free agent to a three-year, $5.7 million contract on July 1, 2012.

The Vancouver Canucks are not the only NHL club that is facing a peculiar situation when it comes to their starting goaltender.

Former Maple Leafs assistant general manager Bill Watters was interviewed on Oilers Now on Friday, and he had both an interesting rumour and some harsh words for Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf. In part, here’s what he had to say:
Dion Phaneuf should be dispatched as soon as they possibly can and the story I hear is that Edmonton’s interested and if they are tell [general manager Craig MacTavish] to take him and have fun with him. I find him to be the most overrated, undernourished hockey player in the history of the NHL and whoever made him the captain of the Maple Leafs should have been fired six years ago.
Cleary remains likely to return, at a rate of around $2.5 million to $2.75 million per for three years, but the Wings need to get someone off their roster of forwards, first. Alfredsson and Weiss have put Detroit at 14 forwards, a number that will grow by two when restricted free agents Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist get new deals.

The Stanley Cup champs are in a bit of a pickle against the salary cap.
The Boston Bruins and Dallas stars appear to be closing in a trade that would see two prominent players swap jerseys.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the clubs are close to a deal that would see Tyler Seguin heading to Dallas, with Loui Eriksson going to Boston.
I am told that Flyers would love to get their hands on N. Horton but the word is, he has a couple clubs in mind, and it's not them

Tsn.ca is reporting that the Blue Jackets will be open totrading their Vezina trophy winning goalie.
Nabokov set to become a UFA and told the Islanders that he will test the market. Schneider may be a trade option.
The Hurricanes are looking to deal the number five pick and they are looking for a defenseman
Finding another goalie remains Holmgren’s primary focus with several side issues.
“He’s made it known he’d like a goalie with no years or one-year left where they can get a read on that player before committing,” a source said.
