Kovalchuk flying to Atlanta
tsn.ca is reporting that Ilya Kovalchuk will fly in to Atlanta either Tuesday or Wednesday to spend time with his newborn daughter. Don Waddell has stated that he would like to use this opportunity to speak with Kovalchuk about a new contract.

This couldn’t have come at a better time. Kovalchuk is flying in just before the start of the NHL season, keeping him from playing in Russia, which would force him have to clear waivers before returning to the Thrashers.

Clear waivers?! Why in the hell would the league’s best goal scorer ever clear waivers? If there is any player in the league worth $7 million a year, Ilya Kovalchuk is one of few.
Waddell better blink and finally realize that this is his last chance to sign Iilya, I can imagine Iilya staying in Russia, but not playing hockey but holding out, if he just holds out, Atlanta can negotiate with him until December.
If he plays a game in Russia after the start of the season he will have to clear waivers before joining the Atlanta if he is signed and i don’t think that he would clear waivers or that Atlanta woul sign him if he plays a game in Russia since they would lose him for nothing
He is soo much fun to watch. And this is Atlanta’s year to pounce on the playoffs. I really hope they get him to sign.
If Kovalchuk is able to talk to DW without Grossman there pulling the strings, something should happen.
Remember, we are talking about the agent who was accused of offering Malkin $50k last year to stay on as his representation. That is a very serious no-no. The PA has never yanked away an agent’s certification, but they will pretty quickly if there’s proof he did this. With the way Grossman has handled some other clients, I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if it’s true.
I think this is the reason why Waddell hasn’t “blinked”, if you can call offering around a $6M/year average blinking. He knows Grossman is a money grubbing agent-whore, and hopefully he can show Kovalchuk (sans agent) that this is more than a fair offer. Though I would imagine that Grossman will do whatever he can to be there if the team wants to meet with Kovalchuk.
With his girlfriend and new baby States-side, and the fact that he has been planning for a while not to play in Russia after October 4 makes you think he really does want to be over here. Just a matter of telling Grossman to shut his pie-hole for a minute, then sign on the dotted.
