It appears the Rick DiPietro era is coming to a close on Long Island, as the Islanders put the goalie on waivers.

Just two points out of the playoffs, and with a respectable minus-2 goal differential, the New York Islanders are nevertheless seen as one of the league’s most logical sellers on deadline day. They are a young team, a team with a tight budget, and a team with a bunch of pending unrestricted free agents, so that’s understandable. Two players in particular – defencemen Mark Streit and Lubomir Visnovsky – have been the subject of frequent trade rumours.
What are the Islanders plans for that duo? Newsday’s Arthur Staple provided some illumination on Saturday night.

With Nino Niederreiter still in the minors and not getting an invite to the Islanders’ shortened six-day training camp, his agent has asked the team for a trade, a league source confirmed.
The trade request, first reported by ESPN.com, came early last week in an email, right around the time the Islanders made call-ups from their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport in order to fill out the roster.
Niederreiter’s agent apparently was displeased his client was not part of that group, despite the fact Niederreiter played 55 games with the Islanders last season, and this season is leading the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the team’s AHL affiliate, in scoring.
AGENT: VISNOVSKY “LOOKS FORWARD” TO REPORTING TO ISLANDERS
‘s agent sent a Tweet late on Tuesday that suggests that the defenceman will soon return to North America to honour his contract with the New York Islanders.
Player agent Neil Sheehy said via Twitter, “ said he looks forward to reporting to the NYI after tending to “personal reasons” which have kept him from reporting.”
The status of the 36-year-old defenceman has been up in the air since he originally announced last week that he would be staying to play in the KHL in his native Slovakia for the rest of the season.
However, the KHL and NHL have an agreement on honouring contracts that prevents players with existing deals in one league from playing in the other.

Lubomir Visnovsky pleads his case today to overturn trade to Islanders
Lubomir Visnovsky, acquired by the Islanders on draft night a little more than a month ago, has filed a grievance through the NHL Players’ Association to void the trade from the Ducks, contending that his no-trade clause is still valid and Anaheim never got his permission to make the deal.
Should he win his grievance, the trade that sent him to the Islanders for a 2013 second-round pick would be rescinded, though Visnovsky’s agent told Newsday that the 35-year-old defenseman has no issues with the Isles.
“[General manager Garth Snow] has been great to him, they’ve had good conversations and Lubo likes what he’s heard about how they want to use him,” Neil Sheehy, Visnovsky’s agent, said. “But this has really nothing to do with the Islanders. For Lubo, this is about establishing what’s right and whether a team has the right to move him in the manner that they did.”
Visnovsky signed a five-year, $28-million contract with the Oilers in 2008 and waived his no-trade clause to allow a deal to the Ducks at the 2009-10 trade deadline. Visnovsky contends the Ducks needed his approval, in the form of a 10-team list to which he would allow a trade, this summer. That was never asked for before the June 22 deal.
Islanders’ Al Montoya could be good fit for Canucks No. 2
In the 2005 world junior hockey tournament, Cory Schneider had a long look at how teammate and roommate Al Montoya handled expectation in backstopping the U.S. to within a win of a medal in Grand Forks, N.D.
It could be the other way around next NHL season. But that might be a bit of a stretch, based more on a past link than a pressing present need. Time will tell.
When the Vancouver Canucks finally move Roberto Luongo in an offseason trade scenario, they will need to address various needs and also find more than just a capable backup for Schneider in his new role as the bonafide starter.
They’ll need someone who can step in and play a number of pre-determined games or more if Schneider succumbs to injury or indifferent play. They’ll need someone who can support the starter and who won’t wilt under the glare of the media spotlight.
In time, that goalie will be Eddie Lack. For now, it could be Montoya. Or it could someone else.
The right unrestricted free agent may provide what the Canucks are seeking because of what the Presidents’ Trophy winners and the St. Louis Blues proved last season.
Isles Offered Entire Draft
How highly did the Blue Jackets value defenseman Ryan Murray before taking him with the No. 2 overall pick in Friday’s first round of the NHL Draft? Enough to turn down an eye-opening offer from the New York Islanders, who, according to numerous NHL sources, offered all of their picks — one in each round — for the right to move up from No. 4 to No. 2 for Murray.
That’s right, for the Jackets’ No. 2 pick, the Islanders offered pick Nos. 4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185. The bounty would have given the Jackets the following picks: 4, 31, 34, 62, 65, 95, 103, 125, 152, 155, 182 and 185. And if that weren’t enough, the Jackets could have had the Kings’ No. 30 if they wanted it.
Next week’s development camp would have required two sheets of ice.
Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson offered a “no comment” when reached by The Dispatch late Sunday. After Friday’s first round, he did mention a “very attractive” trade offer the Blue Jackets declined before selection Murray, a precocious prospect whom many think could play in the NHL this season.

Is Newly Acquired Lubomir Visnovsky Going to Stay in Europe?
Friday night at the Coliseum draft party, Islanders radio man Chris King interviewed the newly acquired Lubomir Visnovsky via phone from Europe. Visnovsky was at home in Slovakia and there’s now a chance that he may stay in Slovakia to play or even head to the KHL in Russia. The slovak website hokejportal.net snagged an interview with Visnovsky after he was acquired by the Islanders yesterday. (Credit to NYIFC for finding it)
In the interview, Visnovsky says that he is weighing offers from both the KHL and from a team in his home country of Slovakia. He has not come to a decision as to where he will play in 2012-13 yet, but it appears that he is seriously considering the other offers. It doesn’t sound like the Islanders are interested in re-signing Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau. Sometimes, people look at guys like him and say, “He’s only getting points because he’s playing with John Tavares.” While that may be true, it’s always a gamble the next guy has the same chemistry with your star. Or that Parenteau will go somewhere else and get 67 points with a different star.
