Senators looking to upgrade their defense
The Senators GM started the ball rolling Saturday by calling up defenceman Mark Borowiecki from the club’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton Saturday but if this group doesn’t show a marked improvement quickly then bigger changes could be made.
It’s believed Murray has held talks with a couple of teams to try to make an upgrade and it’s believed he’ll try to shore up back end if the Senators don’t have success against the Dallas Stars Sunday at home and the Blue Jackets Tuesday in Columbus.

Edmonton Oilers will hotly pursue Jonas Hiller as free agent if Devan Dubnyk doesn’t work out in goal
The Edmonton Oilers will be all over Anaheim Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller this summer, when he’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, if Devan Dubnyk (also unrestricted) doesn’t pan out as their No. 1. The Ducks are loaded in goal with Viktor Fasth, Frederik Andersen and John Gibson, the AHL’s Player of the Month. Hiller, 31, will be the Swiss Olympic goalie.
Did Edmonton miss out on Ilya Bryzgalov?
What possibly could be the justification in Edmonton, where goaltenders Devan Dubnyk, Jason LaBarbera and Richard Bachman have combined for a dramatically deficient .882 save percentage that has undermined Dallas Eakins’ first month behind an NHL bench, for not offering a contract to free agent Ilya Bryzgalov?
Leafs must keep calm over Phaneuf’s contract
While Phil Kessel signed an eight-year, $64-million contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs a few weeks ago, the understanding has been that neither side has illustrated any urgency regarding Leaf captain Dion Phaneuf who also becomes an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.

Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo thought he’d be a Maple Leaf
As Olympic hopeful Roberto Luongo makes his bid to once again don a red-and-white maple leaf on his chest, there was a time not so long ago when he was relatively certain he’d be wearing a blue and white one, as well.
Luongo isn’t too shy to admit it all these months later — he thought he was going to be a Toronto Maple Leaf.
Teams watching Andrew MacDonald
A few teams are watching one of Snow’s guys very closely: defenceman Andrew MacDonald. He’s unrestricted after the season, and a greatly improved player.

Avs could targert Miller is Varlamov goes to jail
Colorado was considered a possible landing spot for Miller during the offseason, but Varlamov put those rumors down by starting 7-1 with a 1.76 goals-against average and .945 save percentage. The Avs appear to be legitimate Stanley Cup hopefuls — they lead the league in goals allowed per game at 1.46 and rank sixth in goals scored at 3.18 — and have 36-year-old J.S. Giguere as a backup.
