Leafs unfazed by increasing trade chatter
For their part, the Maple Leafs say they are refusing to look ahead to the Feb. 29 trade deadline, even knowing the roster may be significantly overhauled in the next 40 days.
“I try not to think about that,” forward P.A. Parenteau said after Tuesday’s morning skate. “I’ve said from Day 1 this season that I’m taking it day by day and game by game. That’s the mentality that I’m going to try to keep through the end of the year.”

“I think with Edmonton, the only thing that changed is that a couple of teams have been calling on Nugent-Hopkins. Now, I don’t think Edmonton – in fact I know – they were not shopping him. I don’t think that was a priority for them, was to trade Nugent-Hopkins. But it doesn’t prevent other teams from checking in, because he’s a young center.

Komarov an appealing deadline asset
Here in mid-January, it’s clear three clubs — Toronto, Buffalo and Columbus — will be sellers at the trade deadline, and pretty evident Edmonton will be, too.
Of those clubs, Leaf winger Leo Komarov and his 16 goals may be the most appealing asset available. Komarov, 28, has two more years at an affordable $2.95 million cap hit, and has shown this season he can play in the top six on the Leafs, and definitely in the top nine of a better club.

Life on the trade block
Minnesota Wild defencemen Matt Dumba and Jonas Brodin are learning to live with their names on the trade block.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, the defencemen have both had their names bounced around in trade talks as the team has struggled through a scoring slump.

“You can’t overreact and force trades,” Fletcher said by phone as he drove to Des Moines to watch the Iowa Wild. “You do that, and that’s when you can turn a small slump into a bigger problem. If something’s there that makes you better, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing well or struggling, you’re going to make a move. When you start to force trades, that’s dangerous and when you make poor decisions.
