Maple Leafs’ John Tavares playing exactly as advertised

Winning free agency doesn’t always equate to winning hockey, although it’s been a long while since the NHL had a free agent like John Tavares.

Still, it isn’t difficult to concoct a scenario where things might not have gone so well for a 28-year-old arriving into hockey’s largest market with the league’s second-highest cap hit and sky-high expectations.

And yet, through the first segment of games the Toronto Maple Leafs have played with Tavares, he’s come exactly as advertised and been worth every penny of the $15-million he was paid in a signing bonus on the afternoon he chose Toronto over five other free-agent finalists.

Brandon Manning ‘open’ to trade out of Chicago

Usually as the trade deadline approaches in the NHL, 28-year old defensemen with a history of success aren’t readily available. Ones that pack a physical punch and are signed to a reasonably low cap hit are usually even more rare, and can generate bidding wars that can get out of hand. Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brandon Manning checks all those boxes, but his struggles this season have made him unwanted on the market and by his current team. There have been reports for weeks that the Blackhawks were looking to move one or both of Manning and Jan Rutta, and Monday Mark Lazerus of The Athletic (subscription required) checked in with the former to see how he feels about the situation.

Great players from Latvia

Latvia is a country of just under 2 million people and is located on the Baltic Sea. Although Latvia does not have a very big population count, it is noted that some very awesome hockey players have come from this nation, most notably, Sandis Ozolinsh. Ozolinsh, was an awesome offensive defenseman in his day and played 875 games for the Sharks, Rangers, Ducks, Panthers and Avalanche.  You should check out sporta likmes to bet on who you think is the best Latvian player.
