Deadline Update: Ottawa Senators

– Ottawa re-signs defensman Filip Kuba at 3years/3.7million per.

– Ottawa also will be sending forward Antoine Vermette to the Columbus Blue Jackets for goaltender Pascal Leclaire & a 2nd round pick.

*Bryan Murray is also making a final effort to re-sign Chris Neil. He also has a deal on the table (either San Jose or Pittsburgh) should negotiations fail to produce an extension.
The Ottawa Senators who are one of the teams from the East that are expected to be sellers in what has been a very disappointing season have begun to make their moves.

Re-signing Kuba is a little surprising and does limit the amount of assests they will be able to get for this underachieving season. But atleast they now have an ideal situation in goal with Brian Elliotte & Pascal Leclaire.

Although Vermette has been less than solid this year, it's a good deal for both teams. CBJ gets a decent forward they were looking for and Ottawa FINALLY gets some stability in net. Now who's backing up who?

i hate the sens but what a beautiful trade by them. that second rounder they squeezed out of them was a great addition.

this should be great for both vermette and leclaire.

    haha
looks like Brian Murrey has more sense than muckies does
and he knew he wouldnt be able to get a decent enough goalie in the offseason so he traded for one now
    good trade actually
the 2nd rounder to Ottawa gives them the nod for the win

  4. hockey_lover says:

Even without the 2nd rounder, Id say Ottawa still comes out ahead on this trade.

Leclaire is a solid goaltender that Ottawa hasnt had in awhile. While Vermette, who has a bunch of talent, hasnt even come close to realizing it. They gave him quite a few chances to succeed but hasnt. He did all he could do here. Hopefully he does will in CBJ but time will tell.

What makes you think the goalie tandem is Elliot and Leclaire?  I think Elliot will be sent back down to the AHL to get his confidence back.  They will keep Auld and Leclaire (unless they tell Leclaire to stay home the rest of the season to make sure he is fully healed).

  6. reinjosh says:

thats how i would play it
rather let him get better and not have him pay this season
then have him play and risk him getting injured

Lets be honest,i doubt the sens would’ve been able to sign either a big name defenseman like Bouwmeester or goalie like Khabibulin.Murray did the next best thing which is re-sign Kuba(decent offensive defenseman) and get Leclaire(solid goalie, young and lots of potensial) via trade.I am a little dissapointed to see Vermette go but he had all kinds of chances to prove himself but i personnaly think he had to much pressure and he will do better in Columbus.Good deal for both.I hope they trade Neil, they need to make room for guys like Shannon,Winchester and Bass. Also, for the end of the season they should give a chance to Zubov on top lines to see what he can do.

I broke into school library right now. Good trade by both teams, Leclaire was expendable, and needed to leave. Columbus needed offence, good trade for both

  9. ccrashh says:

Which means keeping Eliot and Auld for the remainder of the season.  Trade Auld in the off season if necessary.

  10. reinjosh says:

now thats what i said two days ago
and obviously brian murray thought the same thing
but apparently muckies is to proud to comment on this seeing as like 8 different people agreed with me a like two days ago and he was being a douche bag

    From TSN

The Calgary Flames welcomed a familiar face back to the fold on Tuesday, acquiring defenceman from the Colorado Avalanche for a prospect and a draft pick. Details to follow.

  12. muckies says:

Ottawa wins the deal with the 2nd rounder in their pcoket in a real solid draft year. With Leclair there are still a ton of questions over his play and his health. He has shown he can be good, but also shown he can be really bad – He has to get off to a good start in Ottawa next year and if he is rusty early, it'll get ugly fast in Ottawa, he'll have to be good enough to make the playoffs next year and do well.
Leclaire does seem to be really excited to come to Ottawa. I hope he's the guy Ottawa always needed and he as an injury free season and is a good Playoff goalie. He is only 25 and a #8 overall, so he has time to make himself into the one of the better goalies in the Eastern Conference.

  13. hockey_lover says:

Thats a pretty quick turnaround from the other day when you were blasting him for being shite. At least now "he has shown he can be good" and could potentially be one of the better goalies in the eastern conference.

    Good going muck!!

  14. reinjosh says:

    wow
you truly are a douche bag
first you say hes no better than gerber
than you say hes good but hes been bad lately (which i again say is cause of injuries)
make up your mind and stick to it
you will look like so much less of a douche bag and at least a man of your word

  15. muckies says:

I've never been a huge Pascal Leclaire fan. I'll hold my judgement until the All-Star break next season and we'll see what type of goalie he is.

There is going to be more pressure on him here in his first game then any other game he has ever played in his career, so I hope he comes up big early, he can handle the pressure and will be solid for them like Emery was when we went ot the Cup finals. If he can match the play of golaies like Ryan Miller or Thomas it would be huge for the Sens.
